CIA Contractors will be a Focus of Interrogation Investigation

Posted on 08:16 by makhya nitni
Long-dormant cases involving contractors' role in CIA interrogations will gain new scrutiny by the federal prosecutor named this week to review agency tactics.

By Josh Meyer
August 27, 2009

The Justice Department prosecutor appointed this week to examine the CIA's interrogation program will revisit long-dormant abuse cases involving the agency's civilian contractors, bringing new attention to a little-known but controversial element of the Bush administration's war on terrorism.

Civilian contractors used by the CIA at secret overseas facilities were accused of detainee abuses and deaths in a series of cases in the years following the U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, but only one was ever prosecuted. ...

Abducted: Jaycee Lee Dugard Press Conference and a Preoccupation with Mind Control

Police announced today that Jaycee Lee Dugard’s kidnapper, Philip Garrido, was a convicted sex offender. Apparently Garrido and his wife snatched Jaycee at a Lake Tahoe bus stop years ago. The case presents a fascinating PR problem for local authorities, and for the State of California, who are going to have to explain how the parole officer assigned to Garrido failed to notice that he had children living in his home. Further investigation would have revealed that Jaycee was not Garrido’s biological child, which would clearly violate his parole.

Assume for a moment that Garrido and his wife were really good at covering their tracks – sex offender registries are pretty popular these days, and one might think that neighbors couldn’t possibly have not known that these people suddenly acquired an extra child.

That said, the State is going to have to explain how Garrido slipped through the crack. We’re kind of at a loss for a solution to this one, its awfully hard to spin, but here’s my best shot: The Governor or the Attorney General needs to initiate an investigation, not to assign blame, but rather to figure out what went wrong. The only way to get ahead of the curve here is to admit the mistake and try to show a willingness to take a look at the systemic failure that created the problem.

Suspected kidnapper's eccentricities hid criminal past
By Robert Salonga

ANTIOCH — Neighbors thought Phillip Craig Garrido was more than a little strange.

After his spontaneous bursts of opera singing that echoed through the small neighborhood on Walnut Avenue, eccentric is how they described him. Maybe a little suspicious, and kind of annoying with his proselytizing and tendency to push handmade religious literature on them. ...

Garrido kept his criminal past secret from those around him. That past included a federal prison stint for a kidnapping conviction in the 1970s. He was granted parole in 1988, but a violation landed him back in prison from April to August 1993. In 1999, he was out on parole again for a rape conviction, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. ...

Robinson said he sometimes saw the girls in the back yard. He called the sheriff's office two years ago, but nothing came out of a visit by deputies, he said. The living quarters were so well concealed that Garrido's parole agent never sensed trouble in routine home visits to the house where he lived with his wife, Nancy, now suspected as an accomplice in the kidnapping.

Meanwhile, Garrido handed out religious fliers, and invited neighbors to sermons at a local tow yard. His personal blog, tied to a business named "Gods Desire," reveals a preoccupation with mind control, and he claimed to be able to control sound with his mind. ...

When Goering was a Pin-Up: The German Women's Magazines that Mixed Fashion with Fascism

14th April 2009

Hermann Goering poses with his daughter Edda for the cover of Frauen Warte in February 1940 just months before as commander of the Luftwaffe he launched the Battle of Britain

With knitting patterns, recipes and fashion, it seems to offer a diverting read for housewives and mothers. But a clue to the sinister aims of this women's magazine lies in the choice of cover model - Hermann Goering, a Hitler henchman and few people's idea of a pin-up. The Nazi publishers had more on their minds than merely entertaining German women while their menfolk were fighting the Allies.

Each issue of Frauen Warte (translated as Women Wait) contained articles full of propaganda designed to brainwash readers into accepting Hitler's tyranny.

The cover photograph from February 1940 shows Luftwaffe chief Goering cuddling baby daughter Edda in a warped version of the kind of 'tough but sensitive man' images often seen today.

A two-page article claims England is responsible for the Second World War, before more familiar stories on home economics and fashion news

Inside is an article entitled The Expert Housewife of Today, discussing schooling for women in home economics. But there are also two pages devoted to claiming England was responsible for the Second World War because it wanted to take over the world. It is among 65 issues of the magazine belonging to a private collector, which are to be auctioned.

Frauen Warte, the Nazi Party's biweekly magazine for women, ran from 1935 to 1945. In 1939, it had a circulation of 1.9million. Richard Westwood-Brookes, of Mullock's Auctioneers, said: 'As you turn through the pages you get an incredibly creepy feeling.

'It shows the Nazi propaganda machine was so well-oiled it infiltrated every area of human society.

Hitler salutes the troops on one cover of a women's magazine. The collection is going under the hammer at Mullock's Auctioneers and is expected to fetch around £700

'You've got magazines very much in the mould of today's glossy women's mags, filled with things you would expect, but then with propaganda inside.'

The magazines are expected to fetch at least £700 in total at the Mullock's auction at Ludlow Racecourse in Shropshire on April 23.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Missing 18 Years Surfaces in Concord, Two Arrested

CONCORD — Jaycee Dugard, who has been missing from her South Lake Tahoe home for 18 years, has surfaced in Concord, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Two people have been arrested in the case.

Jaycee Dugard, now 29, was abducted in Meyers, in El Dorado County, on June 10, 1991 as her stepfather watched helplessly. The case was cold for nearly 20 years as investigators struggled to make headway into what had happened to the girl. National talk shows like "Geraldo" intermittently brought attention back to the disappearance.

A husband and wife have been arrested in connection with the case and booked into County Jail in Martinez. Phillip Garrido, 58, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, kidnapping, rape, lewd acts with a minor, and sexual penetration. His wife, Nancy, has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and kidnapping. Both are being held on $1 million bail.

Garrido is a registered sex offender stemming from a prior rape conviction. El Dorado sheriff's deputies and FBI agents served a search warrant this morning at the Garridos' home in Antioch.

Further details about the reappearance were expected from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department at a press conference on the case later today.

A woman claiming to be Dugard walked into the Concord Police Department on Wednesday afternoon. Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, said Dugard's mother, Terry Probyn, spoke with the woman and is en route to

Carl Probyn told Bay Area News Group this morning that he got a call from his wife shortly after the news of Dugard's reappearance.

"She said, 'They found Jaycee. She's alive,'" Carl Probyn said. "We cried for about two minutes."

After the woman appeared at the police station, an FBI agent called Terry Probyn and put her on the phone with Jaycee, Carl Probyn said. At first, Terry Probyn thought it was a joke, but then the two women had a conversation that convinced her that she was talking to her missing daughter, he said.

"She believes it was her," Carl Probyn said. "She said Jaycee remembers everything."

Carl Probyn had watched in 1991 as a man and a woman drove by and snatched up Dugard as she walked to a bus stop near their home. He said he is thrilled at the prospect of his stepdaughter being found alive.

"It's like winning the Lotto," Carl Probyn said. "You never dream after 18 years you'll get her back."

Republican’s Search for “Great White Hope” Shows the GOP’s Gut Punch Stupidity

Pardon me. I'm still reeling from the gut-punch stupidity of some members of the GOP. If they can't get away from antiquated, racist and race-based statements, they have no future as a national party.

The latest explosion emanated from the largely unknown Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas while at a town hall meeting in her home district last week. According to ThinkProgress, Jenkins was trying to offer encouragement to conservative activists by saying there were some "really sharp" young Republicans in the House.

Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope, said Jenkins. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington." Jenkins proceeded to name three GOP members of Congress who are all white—Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).

A Jenkins spokeswoman told the Topeka Capitol-Journal that "the congresswoman wanted to apologize for her word choice and to emphasize she had no intention of expressing herself in an offensive manner." "There may be some misunderstanding there when she talked about the great white hope," said spokeswoman Mary Geiger. "What she meant by it is they have a bright future. They're bright lights within the party."

Yes, but they all "happen" to be white males. Not just a poor choice of words, an inexplicably nuclear choice of words.

CIA Fabricated Lockerbie Evidence

Posted on 20:30 by makhya nitni
The real culprits have escaped justice
Ludwig De Braeckeleer (ludwig)
Published 2007-07-21 07

Long before the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) announced its spectacular decision to grant a fresh appeal to the Libyan man convicted of the worst act of terror in the U.K., Lord Fraser, who issued the warrant for his arrest, had expressed doubts about the initial verdict.

Family members of the 270 victims promptly grasped the significance of Lord Fraser's admission.

"Lord Fraser had detailed knowledge of events and I think we have to take seriously anything he says now that is relevant to those who gave evidence at Zeist. It is significant that a man who has been as close as he has to the investigation should be making comments like this," said Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the tragedy and currently represents the U.K. Families Flight 103 association.

A careful reading of the news release by the SCCRC justifying the commission decision to declare the verdict without reasonable basis, can only led one to conclude that the crown had no evidence, let alone conclusive evidence, in the case against Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi.

Why then did Lord Fraser issue an arrest warrant against him in the first place? The answer to this rather intriguing question is both simple and extraordinary. Lord Fraser indicted Megrahi based on fabricated evidence provided by U.S. authorities.

One year into the Zeist trial, the prosecutors were told for the first time that the evidence had been fabricated by a former Libyan agent who had become a CIA asset in 1988. Internal CIA cables show that the agency was well aware since 1988 that the man was a fabricator. The Zeist trial constitutes the only case in history where internal CIA documents were used in a foreign court.

As a rule, the Scottish Prosecution Authorities have a duty to investigate the credibility of their witnesses before they issue an arrest warrant. In the Megrahi's case, they did not. As they blindly trusted their U.S. partners, they failed to perform one of their most basic obligations.

Instead of admitting the fact, they tried to cover it up, thus violating Scottish Criminal Law, which requires the prosecution to provide the defense with any significant information susceptible to help their cause.

Abdul Majid Giaka was a member of the Libyan Intelligence Service, or at least so he claims. In August 1988, Giaka offered his services to the CIA.

As soon as he defected, his handlers in Malta began to send cables to CIA headquarters in Langley concerning his credibility.

About a year later, his CIA handlers had reached the conclusion that Giaka was just some kind of a con artist. They doubted that he had ever been a Libyan agent and feared that he could not possibly provide any valuable information, in which case his CIA stipend should be terminated.

Clearly, we can deduce from the CIA agents' disappointment that -- nine months after the Lockerbie bombing -- Giaka had provided no relevant information whatsoever about the affair.

During the next two years, he never told his handlers anything about the Lockerbie bombing, even when explicitly asked if he knew anything about the possibility that the bomb may have been planted on Pan Am 103 while the plane was sitting on the tarmac of Luqa airport in Malta. Under cross-examination, he admitted that much during the trial.

Then after a dubious witness (who has since been discredited) made a very tentative identification of Megrahi, Giaka suddenly metamorphosed into an eyewitness who could link Megrahi directly to the bombing.

Giaka's credibility was quickly destroyed and the three judges on the panel came to the obvious conclusion that they could not accept Giaka as a credible and reliable witness. And that should have been the end of it. Without any credible evidence against him, Megrahi should have been acquitted.

Yet the panel found him guilty in a verdict that many legal observers have described as one of the most spectacular miscarriages of justice in history. Last month, after three years of investigation, the SCCRC concluded that no reasonable jury, properly directed, could have returned such a verdict.

As I consider beyond belief that a three-year U.S.-U.K. joint investigation could not uncover a single shred of authentic evidence linking Megrahi to the bombing, I have little choice but to conclude, as many have suspected over the years, that an innocent man is serving a life sentence in a Scottish jail.

The conclusion has profound effects as it also implies that U.N. sanctions may have been wrongly imposed over a nation for almost a decade. It also means that the culprits of this odious act of terror have escaped justice.

Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair have consistently opposed the independent inquiry of the Lockerbie bombing so much desired by the families of the victims.

In the words of Justice Secretary Jack Straw, nothing further could be learned from such inquiry. Yet, the former foreign secretary's position on the matter stands clearly at odd with a cryptic, yet abundantly clear, statement by the Iron Lady.

About the 1986 U.S. bombing of Tripoli, which made use of U.K. air bases and during which the two-year-old daughter of Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi died, Thatcher wrote in her 1993 memoirs: "There were revenge killings of British hostages organized by Libya, which I bitterly regretted. But the much vaunted Libyan counter-attack did not and could not take place."

Polls: Half Of Doctors Refuse To Take Swine Flu Shot

Posted on 12:51 by makhya nitni
Concerns about Toxic Contamination Cited

By Steve Watson on 25 August, 2009
http://www.nationalexpositor.com/News/1682.html

... [A] poll conducted by GP magazine reveals that Up to 60% of GPs have severe doubts over the proposed vaccine. Of 216 GPs surveyed, 29% say they will outright refuse to be vaccinated, while a further 29% remain unsure. Only 41% of doctors said they would definitely take the shot.

Of those who said they would not take the shot, 71% said they were concerned that the vaccine had "not been through sufficient trials to guarantee its safety". Over half, 50.4%, said they "believe that swine flu is too mild to justify taking the vaccine".

The Department of Health sought to dismiss the results, declaring that the small number of responders to the surveys was not reflective of the opinions of all doctors.

However, these figures also dovetail with those from a much larger Nursing Times magazine poll, that revealed 30% of all NHS nurses said they would refuse to be immunized, with another 33% saying they were unsure.

Of the 30% of nurses who said they would refuse to be vaccinated, 60% said the reason was due to fears about the safety of the vaccine, following revelations that the shots will contain mercury and squalene and have also been linked with the killer nerve disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Another 31% said they would refuse the vaccine because they did not consider the risk from swine flu to be great enough. ...
