The Birch Society is a fairly well-known fascist front, and its purpose is to destroy the left with fascist machinations and propaganda. They are are offended by democracy ("America is a republic!"). They boast of engaging in "covert operations," supposedly aping the fanstasy "communist" straw men they rail against to push the country further to the right (Nazis are covert operators). Members have been known to mingle with former SS officers and Party Nazis. Early funding came from Nelson Bunker Hunt, a domestic Nazi who funds far-right (fascist) fronts. Birchers took up Joseph McCarthy's mantle and drove the anti-communist hysteria of the early '60s. Birchers founded Western Goals, a highly illicit surveillance front, to spy on hundreds of thousands of liberals in Southern California. The Society has been a magnet for anti-Semites and racists. They were instrumental in the murder of John F. Kennedy. Anti-liberal fantasist Glenn Beck is one of their better-known current "mainstream" media shills ...

Limbaugh Again Compares Obama Health Care Plan To Nazi Policies

Following Drudge's lead, Rush takes Michelle Obama out of context.

Like a broken record, Rush got today's show started with the latest Drudge-special. This time, Drudge posted a headline taking Michelle Obama out of context, and Rush ran with it:

LIMBAUGH: As you know, President Obama is heading off to Copenhagen tomorrow to make a final pitch for the Olympics in Chicago in 2016. His wife, Michelle-my-belle, already there, conducting big-time meetings. She said the most audacious thing, which I'm going to analyze in greater detail in just a moment. She said it is a sacrifice for her to fly over there and make a pitch for the Olympics, that it is a sacrifice for her husband to fly over there to make a pitch for the Olympics, but that they are doing it for the kids.

The full quote, in context, shows that Michelle Obama was actually praising the "sacrifice" of those "working for years to bring this bid" to Chicago:

MICHELLE OBAMA: It does something to a kid when they can feel that energy and power up close and personal. And for some kids in our communities and our city, around the nation, around the world, they can never dream of being that close to such power and opportunity. So that's what excites me most about bringing the Games to Chicago - the impact that it can have on the lives of our young people, and on our entire community.

And I know that's what all of you have been working for for these past few months. As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the President to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home, and you have put together a phenomenal set of ideas that, no matter what the outcome is, we should be proud of as a city.

Rush made an act of all this by saying that Michelle Obama was talking about her "sacrifice" while American soldiers "are being shot at and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan because of inaction and indecision and probably apathy on the part of President Obama." ...

After the break, Rush went on to repeat the Heritage Foundation's speculation of how Democrats would pass health care reform in the next week, as he did yesterday. It was basically a conspiracy theory [speculating] that Democrats would piggyback health care reform as an amendment on a "TARP bonus bill" -- a trick, Limbaugh said, to get around the "fact" that nobody wants what they're concocting.

Rush continued to expose this top-secret Democratic plan to pass health care reform against the will of the people, comparing the strategy to the Boland Amendment in the 1980s, which was attached to appropriations bills and prohibited financial aide to Contras in Nicaragua.

After denying his Obama-Nazi comparisons in recent weeks, Rush again compares Obama's policies to Nazis and Hitler

Then Rush took a caller, who criticized Rep. Grayson for invoking the Holocaust in his remarks, because the health care crisis isn't actually anything close to what happened in the Holocaust. Rush repeated his false claim that Nancy Pelosi was calling half the country Nazis.

Anyway, from here, Rush took to criticizing Grayson -- an "order of fries short of a happy meal" -- for comparing "anything in this country to the Holocaust," which brought Rush to address all the recent Nazi-invoking he himself as entertained in recent months:

LIMBAUGH: The guy is obviously not all there. To compare anything in this country to the Holocaust -- of course, that is what -- you know, when I endeavored to intellectually and properly explain the similarities between the national socialism of Germany and Hit -- and Obama's health care plan, then they said, "I -- well, you can't do that, Hitler, six million people were killed, you can't compare --" No, no, no, no, I'm not, I'm not.

We find this interesting, seeing as it was only recently that Rush was denying making any of these types of comparisons between Obama and Nazis. And today, he just made all of those comparisons he was denying again:

LIMBAUGH: A lot of stuff happened before the Holocaust, and just because the Holocaust happened doesn't mean we have to ignore everything else Hitler was about. And just as Obama's doing, Hitler -- well, even prior to Hitler -- German socialists attempted to remake and order their country using health care as the springboard and the foundation. Same thing that's happening here. Hitler was a man of the left. Nazi is simply the term for the national socialists of Germany. They're far more in common, the national socialists and their domestic policies -- short of the Holocaust -- they're far more in common with what Obama's doing than with anybody on the right.

Rush added: "If there is a Holocaust in this country, it is abortion," and also claimed that nobody is dying in this country because of a lack of health insurance.

Rush continued to lament how Democrats are circling the wagons for Grayson, but Republicans threw Rep. Joe Wilson under the bus. After another break, Rush read what Nancy Pelosi said about Grayson, and Rush opined that he didn't think Grayson should apologize, encouraging him to keep "telling it how it is." Rush went on to read Politico articles about Sarah Palin's book and speech requests and gloating about her popularity while mocking the lack of liberal media stars.

Rush calls elements of Michelle Obama's speech a "pure racial statement"
Hour two began with Rush claiming that Michelle Obama was going to Copenhagen to "bribe" the Olympic committee to choose Chicago for the 2016 Olympics. Rush also asserted -- based on nothing, as usual -- that Tony Rezko would profit from the sale of property to Chicago for the Olympics, as would many people in the Chicago political machine and the Obama White House.

From there, Rush further examined Michelle Obama's speech in Copenhagen, which he took out of context and criticized in the first hour. He read the "sacrifice" quote again, but delved further into the content of her speech. For example, Rush read this excerpt:

MICHELLE OBAMA: This bid also means a lot to me personally because, as First Lady, as many of you know, I've made it a priority to bridge the gap between the White House and communities across D.C. and across the country. I've spent much of my first nine months trying to open the doors to the White House to kids who might not otherwise see themselves having access to these institutions, because that's where I came from - communities like that where kids never dreamed that they could set foot in the White House, let alone live there.

Rush called that a "pure racial statement," and refuted the First Lady's claim that people in the District of Columbia don't have "access" to institutions like the White House by arguing that "[a]nybody can go to Washington and get a tour of the White House any day." He continued:

LIMBAUGH: Anybody can go to Washington and tour any monument or memorial any day. Nobody is stopping anybody from doing this. There are White House tours. If you know, you can call your congressman and you can get some sort of access to a White House tour. There's a number of things you can do. Nobody's denied access to the institutions, for crying out loud.

Michelle Obama wasn't saying the problem with D.C. residents is that they literally lack access to tours of the White House; she expressed herself clearly when she said many of the city's residents "never dreamed that they could set foot in the White House, let alone live there."

Rush continued, saying that he thought Michelle needed a "dictionary lesson" and said she is a woman who is not proud of her country unless she's getting what she wants form it. Rush added that Michelle has no awareness, sensitivity, or ability to relate, and is self-centered and arrogant.

After the break, Rush brought up former Clinton aide Betsey Wright -- who, according to Rush, was in charge of "bimbo eruptions" -- who was recently arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into a prison. Rush sarcastically took credit for Wright's arrest on behalf of the vast right wing conspiracy, again mocking Bill Clinton's comments from over the weekend.

The next caller on the show was offended that Obama would want the Olympics in a city where there is so much murder and violence. Coming back from the next break, Rush mocked the Tokyo governor who warned that the 2016 Olympics could be the last because of global warming.

The next caller thanked Rush for allowing the caller "Susan" to vent on yesterday's show. Rush took this opportunity to again talk up "Susan" and also criticized Hollywood "liberals" for defending Roman Polanski. This discussion continued as Rush took the next string of callers. Rush at one point criticized Whoopi Goldberg for saying she didn't believe Polanski's crime wasn't "rape-rape." Rush later noted Goldberg's defense of her comments. (To clarify, we're not defending Polanski or Goldberg. We're just recapping what Rush talked about on his show.)

Rush concluded the hour by describing how the leftists in the media circle the wagon for people like Polanski and Goldberg. Rush claimed that Dan Rather "makes up" a whole story about Bush in the National Guard, and he got an award because "these people" are protecting their industry.

Rush got the final hour going by discussing Obama's speech at a Democratic Governors Association fundraiser. Before he got to the content, Rush described how liberals are hilarious and fun when they're out of power, but dangerous when they're in power. Then Rush falsely stated that only 4% of the stimulus has been spent so far. In fact, more than 17 percent has been spent.

Anyway, Rush eventually got to Obama's speech and played a sound bite of Obama saying that he was putting Americans back to work with the stimulus. Rush denied that we're putting Americans back to work, and claimed the unemployment numbers were "great news" for Obama because he's "purposefully" destroying the private sector.

Then Rush briefly talked about the latest round of diplomatic talks with Iran, and brought up a 2006 article describing how Iran's nuclear negotiator "duped the West." He then discussed Roman Polanski some more, comparing the controversy to a scene in Blazing Saddles.

Rush on Jimmy Carter and other Dems: "I have had it with race-baiters"
After the break, Rush aired part of an interview Jimmy Carter did for CNN recently, in which the "National Hemorrhoid" -- Rush's pet name for the former president -- claimed that his comments about criticism of the President being racist were taken out of context. Rush played Jimmy Carter's interview on NBC's Nightly News last week, when Carter made his original remarks, and declared Carter's denial was "full of crap."

Then Rush, who has participated in his own fair share of race-baiting, said that he has "had it with race baiters":

LIMBAUGH: Because frankly, I, ladies and gentlemen, as a conservative, as a man, as a Republican, as a citizen, and as your host, I have had it with race-baiters. In 21 years, I have had my fill of it. And I rarely have my fill of anything, but I have had my fill of this -- this race crap.

Turning analysis of this so-called health care reform or health insurance reform or the porkulus bill or cap-and-trade, or whatever the focus groups say they should call it, has nothing to do with the president's color or origin. Nancy Pelosi is not black. Harry Reid is not black. George Soros is not black. Max Baucus is not black. Steny Hoyer is not black. George Soros is still not black. Barney Frank is not black. Chris Dodd is not black. Jay Rockefeller is not black. Chuck Schumer would be black if it would give him more face time on TV, but even he is not black.

Rush continued:

LIMBAUGH: The only black-and-white here -- and I want you to listen to me very carefully -- the only black and white here is that all of these so-called reforms have nothing to do with reform and everything to do with liberals seizing more control of your lives.

What's black and white is that health care's not about anything it claims to be. This has nothing whatsoever to do with race.

Rush suggests headline describing Obama's Afghanistan policy: "Obama tells Afghanistan to shove it until after Obamacare passes"
Then Rush described an exchange between CBS correspondent Chip Reid and Robert Gibbs at a recent press briefing. Reid asked what the timeframe for making a decision on Afghanistan was, and Gibbs responded by saying that Obama would take the time necessary to get the policy right. Rush responded by suggesting a headline for this story:

LIMBAUGH: So the headline today after the press secretary's statement was "Obama to take weeks to study Afghan strategy." Now, if we had real journalists and real news editors, you know what the headline would be? "Obama tells Afghanistan to shove it until after Obamacare passes."

Next, Rush took a caller who was really "appalled" by the idea of a Chicago-hosted Olympics, and was hoping that the city's bid would fail. The caller went on to request that Rush do a "no-Obama" hour of his show. Rush couldn't make any promises, but told the caller he would likely be "giddy" for tomorrow's edition of "Open Line Friday."

The next caller wanted to turn up the heat on Obama. The caller talked about the left's criticism of Bush for not going to New Orleans after Katrina, and asked where Obama is now regarding American Samoa after the tsunami that struck there. (Since Rush didn't, we'll point out Obama did release a statement on the tragedy and declared it a "major disaster," thereby permitting "the U.S. to provide the support needed for a swift and aggressive response.") Rush told the caller that this is a perfect illustration of the idea that Obama can do no wrong.

Before he closed out his program, Rush mentioned Michelle Malkin's "definitive piece" about the Obama White House's connections to the Chicago Olympics. Then Rush aired two clips of Charlie Gibson hosting ABC World News side-by-side -- one was reporting on the recession in 1982, the other from June of this year. Rush claimed the more recent bite was less pessimistic than the way Gibson covered Reagan's recession in 1982.

The Big Sky TEA Party will host John McManus, president of the John Birch Society, on Saturday, Oct. 3, in the basement of Jorgenson's Restaurant and Lounge. He will speak at 7 p.m. on "Restoring State Sovereignty and Preserving Personal Freedom."

McManus received a bachelor's degree in physics from Holy Cross College, served three years as a Marine Corps officer, and began a career as an electronics engineer in 1960. L.A.: The Struggle for Pacifica's KPFK, 2009 - Turning Back Ian Masters and Creeping "Intelligence Community" Encroachment/Board Election Endorsements

Dear friends and political acquaintances:

Michael Novick is a good guy in this fight. Please read his important commentary pasted in below. Please forward to those who may benefit from his perspective and especially to those who are voting in the KPFK Local Station Board elections by the deadline of Oct 15.

Mike is a very well respected individual in the activist community. I've known him for over 20 years. He really knows what's going on, especially in regard to the deception employed in the LA Pacifica community about what's happening at Pacifica radio and the degree with which this deception has pulled the wool over many Pacifica listener-sponsors eyes (and ears) not only in LA but especially in other signal areas who would normally recognize such operations.

I believe many of the Pacifica listeners and activists outside of LA are basing their understanding of Grace Aaron's agenda (with husband & KPFK Local Station Board candidate Ken Aaron) and those of whom are behind her, on very limited information and a narrow analysis of Pacifica's history.

Ian Masters KPFK program, Background Briefing, is the key to understanding what is in store for the entire Pacifica chain of stations (KPFk - Los Angeles, KPFA - Berkeley, WBAI - New York, KPFT - Houston, WPFW - Washington, DC). Their intention is to make Ian Masters a Pacifica syndicated national Pacifica star, sort of following the model when Amy Goodman's Democracy Now was launched during a similar putsch in '95--'97 at Pacifica's stations by the same political forces in LA, Berkeley & Wash DC. However, Ian Masters' program is a very sophisticated and clever propaganda outlet for the US national security state in its effort to reinforce US military and intelligence policy. In other words, deception reigns on Background Briefing and has been key to the continued manipulation and containment of Los Angeles political intelligentsia, especially in the entertainment community (a primary target of intelligence community influence).

Within this effort, spearheading Masters' program to Pacifica National is their parallel objective of forcing on all of the stations more uniform content and in order to do that they will remove many of the important programs that have existed on a single Pacifica station, some for decades. Two of those targeted for removal I believe are: Radio Intifada at KPFK and Taking Aim at WBAI in New York.

Additionally, this political operation is dedicated to transforming Pacifica into largely a non-profit corporation and foundation-funded outlet, thereby avoiding any shred of accountability to it's listener-sponsors who should be the only source of the network's income. These foundations have a liberal and even "progressive" veneers but are in actuality adjuncts for US propaganda operations, military and economic destabilization operations and phony or limited (hang out) investigative journalism through NPR and PBS, among other sources.

The other critical objective of this political operation behind Grace Aaron is the reversal of the democratization of the local boards (listener-elected) and a return of Pacifica's governance structure to an appointed local board model.

Thank you very much for your interest and commitment to protecting Pacifica from those who seek to transform the network into another vapid and useless voice for the (phony) Democratic Party.

The war of words in the Local Station Board (LSB) elections for KPFK and other Pacifica radio stations is heating up. An open letter from Jim Lafferty, host of The Lawyers Guild (as well as a staffer at the National Lawyers Guild chapter in L.A. and a former interim station manager at KPFK) and a vicious counter-attack from Ian Masters, host of a double-serving of "insider analysis" by intelligence community honchos and academics, Background Briefing and Live from the Left Coast, are the latest salvos in a struggle over the direction of the station and the network that are some of the most valuable assets of the so-called left or progressive movement. As in any election, there is no possibility of bridging the gap -- decisive and exclusionarychoices must be made by everyone, no matter how much we may hate the in-fighting, name-calling, and finger-pointing that passes for debate when the left forms up its circular firing squad.

And in fact, in this election, the choice is clear. One side, the side of current LSB member and acting Executive Director of Pacifica Grace Aaron, of her husband Ken, a candidate for LSB, of Ian Masters and other staffers and hosts, is committed to purges, bannings and to 'rule or ruin' Pacifica as an adjunct of the Democratic Party under the mantle of 'fiscal responsibility'. The other side, supporting a platform of a few key principles including loyalty to the Pacifica mission, has backed a list of grassroots activists from various communities around the KPFK listening area who have signed on to the following points of unity:

* Implementing the core values of the Pacifica Mission: voices by and for people not commonly heard in the mainstream media

* Greater autonomy and local decision-making for our radio station

* Fiscal transparency and responsibility: people, not corporate underwriters, supporting people's radio

* Local, diverse, multilingual, and young voices from and for our communities

* Spanish language programming to bring progressive messages to Spanish language communities

* Effective, participatory governance that is accountable to listener-sponsors and responsive to the diverse needs and interests of the Southern California listening community

I have endorsed these principles, although I am not running for anything myself. I have worked -- both in the context of KPFK/Pacifica and in the broader social and political movements of southern California -- with a number of the candidates who have endorsed those principles as the basis of their campaign and as their commitment of accountability to the listeners. (A word about my own qualifications to make such endorsements -- in addition to being a participant in almost every major coalition effort in Los Angeles since I arrived here in 1982, I was elected at a KPFK town hall meeting as a listener member of the News Director search committee some years ago, participated in efforts to rewrite the Pacifica bylaws, and was an elected listener member and elected chair of the KPFK interim Program Council.)

Khallid's name is printed on the ballot -- but you must vote for him as a write-in, because his nominating petition was ruled invalid. I urge you to vote for Khallid (as a write-in on the bottom of your ballot) and ranked number one to insure him the strongest possibility of getting elected under the circumstances that some people may unwittingly vote for by marking the line by his name and thereby waste their vote. Khallid is a survivor/resister of police brutality
by the LAPD which resulted in a police-prosecutorial frame-up; based on that first-hand experience, he has also worked with me in the Jericho Amnesty Coalition to Free All Political Prisoners, defending Mumia, Leonard Peltier, the San Francisco 8 and other victims of injustice and political incarceration.

Lawrence Reyes of the Puerto Rican Alliance, a listener-member of many LSB committees, another ally in the Jericho Amnesty Coalition to Free All Political Prisoners, was singled out for particular vituperation by Ian Masters, probably because Lawrence has been one of the most outspoken and principled internationalist opponents of imperialism, war and colonialism. He, too, is a parent of a LAUSD student, a social worker and union member, a community cultural activist who has brought artists, dancers, exhibits and speakers to Los Angeles to educate the community about the Puerto Rican people and their struggle against US colonialism. Lawrence has fought long and hard for the interests of the listeners, for the needs and voices of the communities of poor, oppressed, working and struggling people in Los Angeles and southern CA to be heard on the air and in the governance of the station and the network.

KPFK and Pacifica have been built with the blood, sweat and contributions of volunteers and listeners like Lawrence, and the station and foundation must not be hijacked by a cabal of well-funded Democratic Party partisans to serve their own narrow interests. Lawrence's experience and commitment means he would be a bulwark on the Board against any abandonment of Pacifica's mission, and a spark plug for maintaining the relevance and connection of the station and its programming to a new generation of young people, in the growing demographic groups of
southern California.

Chuck Anderson is stalwart in the struggle for peace, civil liberties and justice. Like me a grandfather, he retains a connection to younger people just coming in to such struggles. Based in Orange County, he is tireless in his efforts to reach out and organize, to connect with the Palestinian and other Arab and Muslim communities, to oppose the USA PATRIOT Act and other manifestations of a police state, and to struggle for democracy within Pacifica, as well as grassroots community activist access to the airwaves.

John Parker may be the best known of the candidates endorsing the principles noted above. He is a leader of the International Action Center, and has been involved for many years in struggles for social and economic justice, against racism and US wars of occupation and aggression, in the effort to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and other political prisoners, and in fighting for the interests of working people. He would bring valuable skills in coalition building to the station board.

Ruby Medrano has a long history of activism and grassroots community work, particularly in East Los Angeles, going back to work with the United Farm Workers. She has many years experience with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. She has also been a leader and activist in the Democratic Party, which honestly is not my cup of tea, but unlike the Aaron slate, she is not trying to turn the station and network into the voice of the Democratic Party, and is willing to work in coalition with others to ensure that KPFK and Pacifica remain committed to free speech and a broad airing of diverse views and debate.

Cuco (Refugio Ceballos) is a danzante with the Danza Azteca Cuautemoc, those tireless multi-generational cultural/political/spiritual workers whose commitment to resistance, internationalism, healing and decolonization inspires and amazes marchers and on-lookers alike at protests around the southland. Cuco is a member of the community board and a teacher at Tia Chucha's in the north Valley, and he was also involved in community efforts to roll back the horrible budget cuts at LAUSD and to create a liberation school effort when LAUSD slashed summer school classes earlier this year. His commitment to educating and making space for young people is unquestionable.

Tej Grewall is an intellectually-curious young woman of Indian descent who does street level radio journalism as a volunteer, working with the "People Without Borders" collective at KPFK and also serving as a listener-member of the LSB's Outreach Committee helping build the audience and the station's connection to new, younger listeners like herself. She has been on Dedon Kamathi's "Freedom Now" and out on the streets participating in and covering protests for educational justice or against genocide in Africa.

Luis Garcia is a former member of the "Local Advisory Board" under KPFK's and Pacifica's former system of governance. He has been a strong advocate for Spanish-language community-based programming on KPFK. I worked with Luis, who is a former probation officer and a "pragmatic prison abolitionist" and member of Families to Amend California's Three Strikes (FACTS) in the Criminal Justice Consortium years ago, and more recently in CURB, Californians United for a Responsible Budget, in the effort to slash spending on the prison-industrial complex and release non-violent offenders from brutal and corrupt prisons into community diversion and reintegration programs.

Ian Johnston (c) is a current member of the LSB and participant in LSB and PNB committees who has long roots in the Venice community and has been an activist against CIA criminality and the use by the Bush regime of 9-11 to carry out war and repression. He is a former volunteer board operator and sometime programmer/producer of "Another World View is Possible." He is running for re-election to the Board as a strong advocate for listener access to the airwaves and the board meetings, and against making the station and network a sounding board for partisan, state or "intelligence community" operatives.

Three other candidates who have endorsed the same principles as the ones I have mentioned here are Fred Klunder, Dutch Merrick, and Sandi Stiassni, but I have no first-hand knowledge or shared political practice with them aside from hearing them speak on-air or in person. I join in endorsing them based on their commitment to the principles and their endorsement by people I know and trust from common work over a long period, such as Leslie Radford, Sherna Gluck, Bernie Eisenberg, and the candidates with whom I have stronger connections.

This election is vital -- that sounds like a cliche, but in this case I believe it to be true. My analysis, which I believe has been proven out over a number of years, is that "corporate liberal" forces affiliated with the national Democratic Party had taken over and were prepared to bankrupt and destroy Pacifica a decade ago. That was made possible because too many on the "white left" did not respond when the Pacifica purges began with attacks on revolutionary-minded, grassroots community oriented programming by people of color, such as Dedon Kamathi, Family Tree with Kamal Hassan, Jan Robinson Flint and other Black programmers, Ron Wilkins' Continent to Continent, Miya Iwataki of East Wind, American Indian Airwaves, homeless radio producer Michael Taylor, who drew the attention of L.A. to Mumia Abu-Jamal when few on the west coast were aware of his existence, and others. That failure to act paved the way for the complete takeover and makeover, so that by the time they came after Amy Goodman, Dennis Bernstein and Larry Bensky, it was almost too late to act. I am
convinced that the Democratic Party forces that had control at that time, via a self-perpetuating board of Pacifica financing itself and national operations out of revenues from commercialization of the stations' "sideband" frequencies, would have bankrupted the foundation and stations through endless lawsuits -- except for the fact that Bush stole the 2000 election. At that point, needing to keep Pacifica alive for their own purposes, they backed down, settled the lawsuit, created a joint interim Board that adopted restrictively-'democratic' bylaws, and grudgingly agreed to allow a certain number of grassroots community voices of people of color back on the air. Now, with the Democratic Party enjoying control of the White House, the Congress and Senate, these same forces are prepared to break the social contract and coalition that has sustained KPFK and Pacifica as free-speech community oriented media outlets. They want to rule or ruin, with all power and access in their own hands.

They plan to seek foundation funding and underwriters, big ticket donors and thereby free themselves from concern about or accountability to the listeners. They are following the same strategy of purging programmers and staffers of color who do not toe their line, such as Bernard White in NY and Jerry Quickley in L.A. If you want the station and the network to survive in any meaningful form, let alone to thrive as a breath of fresh air politically, culturally and artistically, you must vote for the list of candidates I have named. Otherwise, KPFK will be doomed to increasing irrelevance, its audience shrinking and aging, its airwaves alienating rather than inviting the new generation of young people in struggle for a better, freer future, for liberation and decolonization.

Peter, let me ask you a question just between us 'peers'. Why are you working for the religious cult leader, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who owns UPI and The Washington Times? I know of no respectable journalists who will work for him or any of his companies and organizations. So why do you work for him Peter?

Take a look at the following quotes from various speeches by your boss, Mr. Moon, and tell me why you work for someone like him:

From a June 16, 1997, 15th Anniversary Founder's Address of The Washington Times, speech by your boss, Sun Myung Moon:

Since the end of the Cold War, the world began to realize that the direction taken by The Washington Times was correct. History will not forget our contribution. From the same speech: "Absolute Sex is centered on God, and free sex is centered on Satan. Historically, world literature and the media have often stimulated free sex. But from now on, you literary figures and journalists should lead the way to prevent free sex. Free sex should completely disappear."

Now that you have heard Reverend Moon's speech, you can change your current position 180 degrees and become a new person, new nation, and new world.

"Definitely you are being changed. It is an absolute necessity to change this evil world. This world must be transformed.

"Without recognizing certain realities of the spiritual world, problems will continue to grow. ... "

In a piece published in The American Conservative Union, February 15, 2001, you wrote: "For conservatives, CPAC is more than a gathering; it is an institution of importance. From the first meeting in 1973, when liberals dominated both the Democrat and Republican parties, to today, the conservative political and intellectual movement has moved ahead, beyond the wildest dreams of its founders.

"Today, as most anyone at this event will tell you, they count among their number the president of the United States, most of his Cabinet, the majority of Republicans in both the U.S. House and Senate, and most of the nation's governors, along with a large assortment of state legislators and other local elected officials. As anyone here will tell you, it's a pretty good time to be a conservative."

In a speech on October 20, 2001, New York City, your boss, Mr. Moon said:

"Last year, I presented my proposals [to the UN] to solve the fundamental problems plaguing the planet Earth, given that the world's circumstances have changed and the complex situations in which nations find themselves today are unlike those at the time of the United Nations' founding.

"One of these proposals was to establish a special body that would discuss and evaluate the religious, spiritual and moral dimensions of world problems. The United Nations must serve the world and God's ideal of creation effectively. To do so, it must transcend the power of politics and national diplomacy, which reflect the motives of nations seeking their own self-interest. Only then can it truly protect the human rights of all peoples and nations and build world peace.

"This is not limited to the United Nations. Maintaining order in the world and protecting public prosperity and peace will be difficult as long as political sovereignty operates on the principle of national self-interest and ignores or undermines moral and spiritual values."

And in a speech in Harlem, NY, on May 8, 2001, Mr. Moon said:

"When I was sixteen years old I met Jesus early Easter morning, and set out on the path of Heaven's Will to accomplish the Will of God. I suffered all manner of misunderstanding and persecution, but I never gave up. So I have devoted my life of more than eighty years to the effort of bringing about a world of peace based on the ideal of true families. In 1971, I came to America in obedience to God's command, and for the past thirty years have invested my full spirit and energy to guide America so that it can fulfill the mission for which it was chosen, that is, the mission of the second Israel. "

From the same speech:

"A man's reproductive organ is shaped like the head of a poisonous snake. It is always looking for a hole to slither into. A woman's reproductive organ is concave, like the wide-open mouth of a poisonous snake with fangs. Once this snake bites, poison quickly spreads through the body, bringing eternal death. Adultery does not just destroy the individual, but also the family, clan and nation. In the Garden of Eden, Satan defiled the chastity of youth. He is harvesting the fruit of that crime in the wave of immorality that is engulfing the world's youth in this time of the last days, when history reaches its conclusion."

Peter, when a journalist such as yourself works for a religious cult leader such as Sun Myung Moon, Mr. Moon expects, nay, requires, you to follow the "cult" line. In a review of your work, I have discovered that you have, indeed, followed the Moonie cult line. In exchange for a paycheck, you have written what is expected of you, selling your illegitimate propaganda as objective journalism. Further, in an effort to gain credibility, and further Mr. Moon's psychotic visions of world domination, you have aligned yourself with legitimate right wing organizations.

Peter, you are no journalist. You are a propagandist and nothing more. And, in truth, you are worse. You use your skill to harm and harass other journalists who do not follow the "cult" line. And you malign Democrats to rack up brownie points with your boss, Mr. Moon. So what does that make you Peter? In my opinion, your actions on behalf of Mr. Moon renders you unprincipled.

Human Rights in Argentina and European Hypocrisy ... On Tuesday, September 22, as he was getting ready to enter the cockpit of his Transavia plane to fly back from Valencia to Holland, Argentinian-Dutch pilot Julio Poch was arrested by Spanish police. The arrest was made upon the request of the Argentinian government. It wanted to put Poch on trial for his part in the brutal repression of dissenters and opponents of the military junta—led by General Jorge Videla—that came to power through a coup-d'etat in 1976. According to his personal page on Linkedin, in 1988, a mere five years after the military junta was forced out of power by its pathetic mismanagement of the economy and the lost Malvinas/Falklands War against Britain, Poch joined Transavia as a pilot. Transavia must have been glad to hire this experienced pilot.

Flying Dutch-made Fokker aircraft, Poch had participated in the systematic liquidation of untold numbers of defenseless prisoners, who were brought on board drugged and handcuffed and then flown to the icy waters of the South Atlantic to be pushed out. It is estimated some 4.500 people were killed in this fashion.

Argentina is unique in prosecuting not only the junta members responsible for the savage violations of human rights and the torture and killing of thousands of fellow-citizens. It is also making efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators at the lower echelons. After all, according to the jurisprudence setting the framework for crimes against humanity—the Nuremberg trials—every individual also has a personal responsibility and cannot defend his actions by alleging these were ordered by superiors. If an order runs against universally accepted, elementary human rights, one has a higher duty not to obey it. If former SS men like Klaus Barbie and Erich Priebke could not hide behind the argument of having to carry out orders and neither will Julio Poch.

If Poch is tried and found guilty of the charges brought against him, he will follow several other former officers of lesser rank that have been put behind bars in Argentina.

So far some factual dimensions of the Poch case. Its wider significance and implications are interesting to say the least and also have a twist of irony.

The Dutch, like the champions of hypocrisy they have always been, have been playing a dubious role in the Poch case. First they let him into the country and give him a nice job and a passport. Then, according to Argentinian news sources, the Dutch foreign minister—a man who deserves to be tried for his share in the NATO war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq—helps extradite Poch to Argentina. Spain's role is hardly less devoid of hypocrisy, as befits a country that has been so long in the clutches of the most fanatical and backward outgrowths of Roman Catholicism.

Nevertheless, the European media do not seem to understand the significance of the Poch case and others like it. That is understandable. To even pause and reflect on it for a minute would lead one to ask uncomfortable questions about Europe's current involvement in the truly massive human rights violations in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans. The media and the public prefer to look the other way and think of something else. Just like many Argentinians were doing at the time of the military junta.

However, Argentinians have recognized their error and as of today are still settling accounts with their past. Let us hope one day Europeans will be able to follow their admirable example. By Hans Vogel ...
